Overview
Demand has been increasing for “lead (Pb)-free” and "RoHS
compliant" product primarily in response to two European directives: Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) 2002/96/EC
and Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) 2002/95/EC. RoHS requires that by July 2006, the European Union (EU) states will ensure that
all electrical and electronic equipment put on the market restricts the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium VI, PBB and PBDE. PBB and
PBDE are flame retardants used in some plastics.
RoHS applies to these products in the EU whether made within the EU or imported.
